Tutoring Services And The Future Of Education

In the western world public school teaching as we know it began half way through the nineteenth century. From the perspective of human history on earth it is a very recent phenomenon. Before huge education plants were built for the mass purveying of literacy, education was in the hands of tutoring services.

In the perspective of human history the Internet is a baby only a few minutes old. Yet its advent has already overturned civilization as it has been known for centuries. Individuals have access to the world's greatest libraries and galleries throughout the world. Academic research, banking, trading and politics are managed from home computers or handsets connected to the World Wide Web. Though it is not widely recognized real education is happening through the Internet rather than in overcrowded classrooms.

Statistics show that many people are opting for home schooling, in effect rejecting traditional schools. This is possibly because it has long been known that schools hold many students back and fail to teach basic literacy to those that have not acquired it at home. Built in egg box structures schools have traditionally been designed to accommodate twenty-five to fifty restless adolescents in a room with a slightly older adult who is unable to keep order or impart useful learning attitudes.

The evidence that state schools hold students back academically is incontrovertible. Many people argue that it is justifiable because schools do teach people how to live with their peer group. However, it seems likely that socialization can be accomplished in other ways such as through clubs and interest groups. This also reduces the chances of young people being exposed to state indoctrination programs.

Education has been conducted through tutoring services for most of human history. Parents and grandparents act as tutors when they cannot afford to pay for experts. They teach ethics, basic knowledge and manners so effectively that the identities of their charges are shaped by what they learn at home or through tribal communities. The power of tutoring is very well demonstrated in tribal communities where schools do not exist but cultural values meticulously observed.

Some educational managers seem to be under the misapprehension that tutors and teachers should be young. The reason is possibly influenced by the fact that young people are cheaper to employ but also by the notion that young people have better rapport with young students. Psychology and experience suggest otherwise. The relationships between grandparents and grandchildren demonstrate great trust and respect. This is a syndrome that often applies between young and old.

The work of great tutors such as Aristotle, Socrates and Confucius have shaped civilization as it is known. Greek pedants are known to have transferred classical ideals, first to the Roman Empire and then to the whole of Western Civilization. Mature tutors exercised their power through the influence that they wielded over their students.

The World Wide Web is a development that can enable the world to dispense with gritty asphalt playgrounds, disgusting graffiti, bullies, and grimy dog-eared school books. Mass indoctrination in state education institutions can be replaced by tutoring manhattan services that enable students to learn independently, at their own pace and with the personal help of experts. In some cases the help may come from across the globe but be as personal and intimate as if two people are sitting in the same room.
