Choosing a career is one of the most difficult decisions we have to make in our adult lives, the time and money invested in training for a profession means we can't just change our mind if we don't like it a few years down the track. Choosing a career is a decision that shouldn't be taken lightly, do you research and ensure you would be happy with this choice long term.

Personal training is a career that can be pursued by training buffs. It is the fastest growing profession in the health and fitness world. There are schools that offer personal training courses impart skills to become an excellent personal trainer. They cover many areas like body building, exercise physiology, nutrition and weight management. One can get employed in hotels, spas and country clubs etc.

It sounds simple but it takes a very skilled and gifted person to become successful. You are in charge of setting people up for success, motivating and inspiring them and sometimes it is a difficult task. Steps to becoming a personal trainer:

See if you have what is needed - Personal trainers need to have wide range of skills. One needs to be patient, organized and an excellent listener and motivator. Lead a good lifestyle and be an inspiration to customers. A lot of personal trainers make great councilors.

Select a certification - How much it costs, the conditions and whether they have workshop/ exam in your area or a home study program.

Choose a specialty - One can get specialty certifications such as the MAX Fitness courses in starting your own personal training business.

Get employed at a club - Get to know the availability of jobs and the application filling procedure and find out about jobs offered in your area while studying.

Start your own business - Decide on a name for your business, come up with a solid marketing plan and organize your business registration.

Market yourself - Get pamphlets distributed in your area and offer free consultations and seminars.

Improve your skills and education - to be a good physical trainer you must continually improve and be up to date with the new trends.

Become a valued trainer - Get yourself out there, train in all the new trends, go to seminars, constantly furthering yourself will keep clients interested in you.

Beyond personal training - You could open group exercise classes or study further papers in nutrition and offer a nutritionist service, the options are endless.

However, if one enhances qualifications, the earning potential will also rise. One should not expect a high salary initially, most trainers start from low.

Getting clients through your door is the easy part, keeping them there is where you have to really work. Find ways to keep current clients happy while still attracting new ones.

Online or distance learning courses - is the best option as one can study and do assignments at your free will without the pressure of regular school and homework. Anyone can go for these courses but the basic requirement is that one must be motivated.

With a major portion of the population getting to know the effects that physical fitness has on their health the requirements for individuals with a good knowledge of physical fitness is constantly rising.
