Since the dawn of time, herbs been a staple of our everyday lives. The advent of homo sapiens has resulted in so many different ways to use herbs. There are medicinal herbs and those used for cooking. And can you believe this - herbs can even be magical at times? Do you want to have your own herb garden? If it is, then these herb garden ideas should all come in handy. Ask yourself how you want your garden to be. Consider the herbs you want to plant. What types in particular? Do you prefer annuals, biennials or perennials? Ask yourself as well about the space in your garden. Research will play a key role here when answering this question, as several books can point you to the right direction in choosing plants that will fit in your garden. List or draw your garden on paper first. Now you don't have to draw like Da Vinci or Picasso, of course not - you just have to have something that would give you an idea of where to place, and how to separate the annuals from perennials, for instance. The best place to plant your perennials would be on the corners of your garden so you won't have it so hard if and when you have to till your garden. You should also remember to plant your taller plants in the back row of the garden while the shorter plants right up front. You want your plants to be well-positioned so that they can grow larger. Positioning your plants would be key in this instance.

Some Design Ideas

One good design idea would be to have a square herb bed. Try dividing the square into four by two paths that measure about three feet and cross each other in the middle. You can border it with stone or brick. Another neat add-on would be the wooden ladder. You can lay it down on your garden and plant your herbs between its rungs. Use a wagon wheel bed if you want your garden to feel like the Old West. You'll want to do something similar to what you would do when using the wooden ladder as a prop. Plant in between the wagon wheel's wedges and grow your herbs there.

Get Your Plants Growing

When making your garden bloom to full effect, you must consider the needs of your plants. This makes it absolutely necessary for you to decide beforehand what herbs you want to plant before starting your garden. Basically, you are giving yourself a good ballpark estimate of the necessary steps in caring for your plants. Research diligently and read up on the germination and soil temperatures required for certain seeds. If you see the seedlings sprouting, check the plants' air circulation, humidity and sunlight. Your plants would then need to be spaced once leaves start sprouting.

One of the plants that are easy to grow are herbs. You just have to ensure that the soil is fertile, that the drainage system works, and that your herbs get just the amount of sun, air and moisture they need. You can be sure of a good, bountiful harvest even if some and not all of these requirements are met.
