A garden doesn't just have to just be a space for you. With the right mindset you can create something that acts to conserve the beauty of this country. Wildlife can transform a plot of land into a relaxing idyll, and there are simple steps you can take to make sure you cultivate its attention. Here are some ideas for people that want to do their bit, and help themselves relax too.

The most obvious way of attracting wildlife is probably by putting food out for birds. It's a simple and effective way of turning your personal space into a great resource for these beautiful creatures. Bird song and the many varieties of colours of British bird species helps create and incredible sense of calm. It can also be a good idea to set up bird boxes in time for spring, as this gives you little lodgers, and gives the birds a real helping hand when it comes to rearing the next generation.

Butterflies are sadly not as abundant as they used to be. Even in the last decade you can notice a staggering difference between gardens flooded with these creatures and now barely seeing them at all. You can make things easier for them by making sure not to kill caterpillars, even if they are threatening your veg, and by introducing buddleias to you flower beds. These gorgeous plants are irresistible to butterflies and bees too, so you're doing everyone a favour.

Larger mammals are less abundant in cities, although you still might notice the odd hedgehog and fox. If you're in the countryside you can really go to town on attracting these elusive beasts with scraps of meat and peanuts. You may even be lucky enough to get badgers. Do watch out that you're not just encouraging rats though - tidy food away, and try to keep an eye of it for who is actually doing the eating.

And that's it. With a few simple steps you can help wildlife and enrich your personal bit of land, ensuring that you've not only got more reason to relax, but that future generations can enjoy them too.
