Deck Awnings: Expanding Outdoor Comfort and Living Space

Deck awnings come in a wide array of styles, colors, and types thus giving many options when looking for the one that is perfect for your home. Whether you decide to go with a stationary or retractable awning, most are attached to your home and can depend on your backyard and the amount shade you require. The most popular types are aluminum and cloth and can vary in price depending on the durability requirements.

Awnings placed over the outdoor recreational areas of a deck or awning increases the amount of time spent in the area since the covering creates a cool, protected area out of direct sunlight. This not only expands the comfortable living area outdoors but also makes it much more appealing to outside.

In general, there are two main types of awnings for decks, which are retractable or stationary. Retractable awnings attach directly onto the home and offer the flexibility of being adjusted to desired coverage, the ability to be close, and even the ability to be removed if necessary. The major advantage of a retractable patio awning is that if there are heavy rainstorms, heavy winds, or severe weather, you can retract the awning and keep it safe from damage. Stationary awnings are attached to the home as well but once installed, they remain the exact size and shape and are not able to be changed. These are nice for year-round shade and stability however some claim that they can cause a decrease in home value at time of resale.

The next question is which type of awning is best for your home? Aluminum or cloth? If you are looking for stability and durability, then an aluminum patio cover may be the best option. Aluminum awnings for decks are much more structurally sound, giving extra protection during high winds and heavy rain storms. Another benefit is that they require less maintenance, which means less work on your end. However, due to their higher price tag, most people choose aluminum awnings for smaller areas to keep costs lower.

Although not quite as durable, cloth awnings still provide equal amounts of shade and comfort as the aluminum covers. The advantage that the cloth patio covers offer is the ability to cover much larger areas due to the lower cost. The downside to cloth awnings for decks is that they can easily be damaged or torn during high winds, hail storms, or even heavy rainstorms. Most people recommend that if you go with a cloth awning, get a retractable one to prevent any future damage caused by storms or other extreme conditions.
