If you need to plant a boundary hedge on your property and are not sure of which plants to choose, you should consider using evergreens which offer excellent cover all year round.

Although it costs slightly more to purchase evergreen hedge shrubs, compared to the price of deciduous varieties, they are frequently the best option for your project and therefore worth paying a little extra for.

You gain a number of benefits by using evergreen shrubs. They are highly effective when used to reduce the impact of several types of pollution and are great for providing additional privacy.

There are a vast selection of fantastic evergreen plants to choose from, so it is easy to find plants that you love to suit your project perfectly. For optimum interest , blend several evergreens together.

Yew and Laurel are very popular options for creating an evergreen border.

Yew (Taxus baccata) is a classic choice in the United Kingdom, possibly because it likes quite a lot of water! It is a dense , dark green shrub which grows small red berries during the autumn. Yew is a hardy evergreen that is reasonably straightforward to grow in any soil type with good drainage. In correctly prepared soil, you can achieve growth of up to 30 centimetres every year.

Laurel is known for its large glossy leaves. It is extremely hardy with vigorous growth of between 30 to 60 centimetres a year. In springtime, the Laurel will produce white flowers, followed by gorgeous berries in the autumn. You can grow Laurel successfully practically anywhere you like. Like most evergreens, both the Yew and the Laurel will keep their shape well if you trim them once a year.

Individuals looking for something a bit different might like to look at Bamboo, or Escallonia. Bamboo is very popular in modern garden design and creates a slightly more unique, exotic appearance. Bamboo grows rapidly so for many projects it is a popular option. There are lots of great looking varieties to choose from and once established they provide a striking and unique boundary. Seek advice when choosing your Bamboo because certain varieties can be invasive. Certain varieties are much less invasive than others and there are beautiful green, golden and black varieties of Bamboo.

Escallonia is favoured by many due to the abundance of bright red flowers that bloom from June, through to October. It can grow up to 45 centimetres a year and is a great choice of evergreen with small, dark green foliage.

Get some advice in your local garden centre relating to the most appropriate plants for your location and soil type.
