Because evergreens give you such excellent cover throughout the seasons they are usually the best choice when planting a boundary hedge.
It is well worth paying a little bit more for evergreens.
Evergreen shrubs provide many advantages and look great all year. Evergreens are very effective for privacy screening and disguising unsightly views, as well as being capable of reducing the unwanted effects created by pollution.
With so many different evergreens available, you will have no difficulty finding the perfect plants to suit your project. Remember that it is not necessary to choose only one type of plant as you will often achieve far better results by combining several different varieties for additional texture, tone and interest.
Two of perhaps the most common choices for an evergreen border are Yew and Laurel.
Yew (Taxus baccata) is the classic choice in the United Kingdom, possibly because it requires quite a lot of water! It is a dense , dark green shrub which produces small red berries during the autumn. As long as the soil has reasonable drainage it is an easy evergreen to grow. You can expect it to grow around 30 centimeters a year.
Laurel is known for its large glossy leaves. It is a hardy plant, which can grow up to 60 centimeters per year. In addition to its lovely autumn berries, it also produces white flowers during the spring. You can grow Laurel successfully practically anywhere you like. Both Yew and Cherry Laurel will benefit from being trimmed once a year in spring to keep their shape.
For a slightly more unusual result you could try Bamboo or Escallonia to create a border. Bamboo is becoming more popular in modern garden design and creates a slightly more unusual, exotic look. Bamboo grows rapidly so for a number of projects it is a popular option. You can rapidly create a wonderful boundary using a variety of different Bamboo's. Be careful because some varieties of Bamboo can be invasive. Some varieties are much less invasive than others and you can choose from, green, golden and black varieties to choose from.
Escallonia is a lovely choice for a burst of vibrancy as this plant is covered with gorgeous red flowers for almost half of the year. It grows up to 45 centimetres each year and is a great choice of evergreen with small, dark green foliage.
These are just suggestions, look around for the perfect hedge plant for your project.
