Having a swimming pool installed in your yard is an expensive proposition. Than when you consider that sagging home resale numbers have taken the profit incentive out of having a pool installed, it's no wonder that more people today are considering doing the job themselves. Cutting out the contractor, rolling up their sleeves, and doing all the digging and "whatever else" is involved in a pool job with their own two hands.

So step one is the planning stage, and this involves getting the necessary permits for the excavation which is important here. This is because you need to get clearance from your local municipality to ensure but there's no pipes or electrical lines or "anything else" for that matter running in underground where you plan on digging. Now this is for sure no area take a shortcut either because if you cut into something repair costs and fines can easily run into the tens of thousands of dollars.

So after the planning and permits are out of the way, the next step is beginning excavating, and if you're like a lot of people out there you might be planning on doing it with pick and shovel. It's been done before but it's an "incredible job" to do by hand. What you need to know here, is that you can rent a backhoe and a dump truck down at your local rental yard. No you don't need any special permits or special training.

Even so, it certainly does helps if you at least know the basics of how to operate one because you don't want learn as you go on the job with such a dangerous piece of equipment. Then how do you learn? The answer is simple, and that is to go online and scout out some the instructional material, like DVDs that teach the basics of heavy equipment operation. Now a backhoe operation DVD like this won't make you an expert but it can teach you the basics that you need to excavate a large hole in the ground in your yard.

Then something to think about here is the depth of your deep end if you plan on having a diving board installed. Take the little time that it takes to research the number of serious accidents that are reported each year by people hitting the bottom of the deep and that's dug too shallow. Pools used to be that deeper but in more recent times, to save money; contractors haven't been digging the ends of the pools deep enough, leading to a sharp uptick in diving injuries.

Then finally before you take on the task of installing the steel rebar, and doing all the cement and tile work you may want to look into simply having a vinyl liner installed. Not only will this option save you about 90% on your materials costs but it doesn't require the same level of expertise to install. Then also by going with a vinyl liner you can have your project finished and filled months ahead of schedule.
