Movement from one point to another of people and goods is a common aspect of human life and it takes place on a daily basis. A prudent person will have to take some time and weigh options such as cost, safety and reliability just to highlight some before choosing the mode of transport. Rail services have for a long time stood the test of time and proved the better option for many.

The presence of proper rail network linking different places and even countries, trains have favored the transportation of goods more so bulky and heavy ones from one place to the other. This mode of transport is very convenient unlike road transport. Noticeable growth in transnational trade has been realized when goods are transported from one city to another or even one country to another.

Buses may seem faster but cannot compare to the speed of trains especially in an urban set up where traffic snarls are very common. The train services are offered in time schedules making it more reliable thus used by a majority of people. This favors so much employees who operate on a daily routine with stipulated times of arrival and departure from work.

The rise in road accidents has made people to result to the use of trains for safety. There are minimum accidents reported to have been caused by this mode of transport and rare cases of the system breaking down. This mode of transport is comfortable compared to vehicles where people sit closely leaving no space between each other especially city transport.

Trains have an advantage in its flexibility in that when the demand grows, it only requires additional wagons or coaches to be attached to the engine. When we look at road transport, on the other hand the buses are made with a fixed passenger capacity, which is never flexible to accommodate more. For the low wage earners they have always enjoyed a cheaper option of traveling to and from work therefore encouraging more to turn up for work.

Just like any other good thing, some demerits are always there. This important way of moving people as well as goods requires a very large amount to set up. Besides that, it is a very expensive venture to maintain both the engines and the railway lines. It is more challenging to run in a place with a little population since the cost of operation would be more than the earnings made.

Despite the careful and considerate scheduling of times for departure and arrival, people always have very different timings that make it not accommodative to all. For this reason therefore some people suffer the lost of time as they are forced to get to their destinations earlier than they are required to. Due to the set up cost, this mode of transport is restricted to networked places only.

Trains may prove a little slow especially in cross border transport of goods as the process of loading and offloading at different points of the way may cause delays. The services are only limited to places that have a railway network which is not a common feature in most rural places thus limiting such people from using it. Rail services tend to be costly when used for short distances and transportation of small goods, which are not very heavy therefore, in such situations road transport is more appropriate.
