For many people gardening is a hobby that helps them relax and enjoy the fresh air. However, plenty of other people simply don't know where to start. Gardening is a huge subject with a huge variety of things to do, all depending on the size of your garden and the experience you have.

Make A Plan - When thinking about starting work in your garden, try to come up with a plan to detail what you'd like to achieve. Perhaps you want to have a vegetable patch or elaborate flower beds? You may also need to start off with a load of clearing work, so make sure you include all of this in your plan. A good plan will help you budget for both time and money, saving you stress in the long run.

Begin to Landscape - The next step in the process will involve some basic landscaping. This basically means taking your garden from it's current position to one that's ready for your plans and ideas. Whilst you're doing this it is also a good idea to think about where you might position your garden accessories such as seating, tables and BBQ.

Prepare your Soil - In order to create a healthy garden where your plants, flowers and grass grows you'll need to ensure that your soil is of good quality. If you're starting from a garden that's a bit of a mess it's likely that you will have to do some work to make sure that your soil is good enough to ensure healthy growth. Try using fertilizer mixtures, compost and manure to make sure that your soil is full of the nutrients that plant life requires.

Getting the Plants Right - Choosing the correct plants and flowers for your garden is yet another important learning curve that beginner gardeners must undertake. You need to consider various factors such as sunlight, rainfall, soil and climate. Each plant type will have it's own individual requirements, and some may simply not suit your garden. If you're unsure take a trip to your local garden center and speak to a specialist who will be familiar with your area.

Irrigation Methods - Watering your plants is vital and the method you choose to do this is known as irrigation. The majority of people use watering hoses although it takes a lot of time and effort to ensure you reach every plant, especially if you have a large garden. Another option is drip irrigation which is quite costly but it waters your plants through a network of pipes, valves and emitters.

Take It Slow - Once you've made the important decisions above, make sure you separate your garden into segments; therefore you can perfect one section and then move onto the next. If you rush to do your whole garden all at once, especially if it's a large space, it could get too stressful for you. The aim of gardening is meant to be enjoyable so don't take too much on when you begin.
