Erosion is a very serious problem that could be very devastating to the soil. It is important to deal with it on time to avoid its repercussions. There are different ways to do this. The use of an erosion control blanket is an effective method for dealing with this problem. It provides a means of reducing the speed of water over the soil.

It is usually made from rough material that can easily obstruct the flow of water over the ground. There are two basic types. One is made from synthetic fiber like polypropylene while the other is made from natural material like jute, coconut fiber and straw.

It is available in a variety of sizes and these are in rolls. The most common sizes are in yards of eighty up to one hundred squares. And as the customer requires, it can further be sliced into smaller proportions from four to about ten feet.

This material is long-lasting and can provide effective use for as long as a decade. The materials used for producing it are all biodegradable regardless of the type, be it fiber or natural. It is in no way harmful to the soil. After some years, it breaks into smaller pieces and forms a part of the earth.

Setting-up the blanket can easily be achieved. The place where it will be set-up should be made ready. Stones and other large objects should be thoroughly cleared to give it a complete touch with the soil. It also needs to be softened and this can be made possible by tilling it a few inches. Fertilizer can then be added before the seeds are sown in.

The last stage is to place the erosion control blanket flat over the area. It has to be held down firmly at two ends and at certain points. This is achieved by burying the end s in a trench and covering with sand. Wooden pegs are used at measured distances of the length.
