Window washing is not an easy task to the inexperienced. It can be a very frustrating task if you do not have the appropriate pieces of equipment. On the other hand, if one has the required materials, it is a very enjoyable task. Properly and regularly cleaned window improve the lighting of rooms and the hygiene of the entire building. Depending on the size of the unit, you may choose to do the task yourself or to hire a commercial cleaning company. The tools required may be simple or complex depending on factors such as affordability and task complexity.

The main pieces of equipment that are required are rather basic. If you are cleaning windows of your house or a small office unit, all you will need is water in a bucket, a detergent, a mop, a squeegee and a scraper. The scraper is used to remove the very stubborn stains that get stuck on the window surfaces. The squeegee helps in the collection of excess water as the surface is rinsed. If you are dealing with storey buildings, you will most likely need a ladder.

Having collected all the necessary items, you can now proceed to the window cleaning process. Firstly, some detergent is applied on the surface to be cleaned. A sponge is used to remove the dirt and loose debris before the water is dried with a mop. A scraper is used to remove remnant stains and debris. To avoid unnecessary scratches, unidirectional forward scrapping should be used. Use the squeegee to drain any other water left on the surface.

The most commonly used technique is one in which one side of the glass involves the use of vertical strokes and horizontal strokes. Such a technique has the huge advantage of helping increasing visibility. A soaked sponge used together with a squeegee is one of the most effective ways of removing the very small streaks of dirt. Toothpaste may be used if there are some minor scratches on the glass.

Avoid doing this exercise on sunny days if you wish to get good results. Sunlight causes evaporation of detergent before rinsing has been done. Even after polishing the results are not satisfactory. To polish, there are a number of materials that can be used. Old newspapers and old shirts are good enough.

Even as you plan to embark on this task, you need to know that it is a potentially dangerous undertaking. A significant number of people have lost their lives when working on storey buildings and one needs to be very careful. Slippage due to soapy water and unstable ladders is a common cause for accidents.

Automated machines have been widely adopted by many people in many places in a bid to reduce the incidence of accidents. Although such a move is quite expensive, the results are tremendously good; accidents are reduced markedly. The alternative is to modify the ladders in a manner that makes them more stable. Accidents can also be reduced by minimising the time spent on the ladder.

Window washing is almost always an enjoyable exercise as long as it is done in the right way. The right equipment, skills and weather are all necessary. Cleaning should be done regularly to windows both at home and at the office. Persons that frequently do this have reported better room lighting and subsequently savings in lighting costs.
