For a lot of children playing in a tree house is a part of growing up. It tends to be exciting and a fun place to mess about and camp in. As adults there is always the fear that children could potentially hurt themselves. However if you design it properly you can ensure that children have fun and their custom tree houses are a fun and safe place to play around in.

Before you begin work you need to check local planning permission and regulations. It may sound strange but there are varying views on this. Some local areas consider it to be an additional structure and therefore you are required by law to get the relevant permission before you can build it.

In other places the law is less clear. In this instance you should be able to build. However it is still advisable to talk with your neighbours and let them know what you intend to do. While you should be legally able to construct something it is still polite to talk to your neighbours so that they know what you are doing and what you build will not impede their view or create any other potential issues.

Some people debate whether or not you can call something a tree house if it has any point on the ground. Some people argue if you have to include supporting posts then it is not really something that fits the name. However if you want to keep your children safe and a support structure is necessary then you should do this.

There is some debate as to whether or not adding a post means that you have not technically built a tree house. However if you need to add some kind of structure in order to keep your children safe then this should not be an issue. Ultimately while there is always some degree of risk you should keep them safe as much as possible and if you need a support structure people should not object to that.

A good addition are entrances and exits. A rope ladder at the back and a ladder at the front are common. However trapdoors and hidden entrances and exits can also add to the fun. The only real restrictions are your budget and your imagination. However remember to check the height of your children and that it matches their height rather than your own. This may seem obvious but it is easy to forget while you are building something.

If you are doing this for the first time then it helps to look up video tutorials. This can guide you through various aspects of the design and construction process. The advantage of this is that you can pause the video at various points so you can gradually learn how to do the work properly.

You can find various tips to help you build custom tree houses online as well as video tutorials to guide you through each step of the design and construction process. There are also various places where you can get the supplies and equipment you need. With the right approach you will be able to create something that your children will love.
