Weeds are something every gardener has to contend with. During the spring months, when the rains are just beginning, they spring up everywhere and if not properly handled, can be destructive not just to plants but also to grass on the lawn. Getting rid of weeds is an integral part of gardening which requires the correct weeding implements in order to get the job done most effectively. They are categorized into either short or long handled weeding tools.

Short Handled Weeding Tools: These are used for close work that requires detailed attention. There might be shrubs or some other plant that grow low, near the ground; reaching underneath these plants to get at weeds would require some of these short handled tools.

Scrappers: These are implements used for removing weeds at close quarters. Useful for getting to those weeds right at the bottom of your plants, careful use will ensure that you do not take out the plants along with the weeds. It has a short wooden handle and a triangular shaped head which is attached to the handle by a long metal shaft. It is also a useful tool for getting rid of weeds along cracks and is also known as a Hand Weeder.

The triangle hoe on the other hand is a hoe that would likely be recognized all over the world. Though it is useful for scrapping, it is more suited to the removal of tough and stubborn weeds. It is used for heavy duty tasks and works well on hard grass.

Not everyone is suited to the bending that most weeding jobs require. This could be for several reasons including back pain or a disability. Where the need exists to get rid of weeds, this can be done through long handled weeding tools which make it possible to carry out the required tasks while standing, eliminating the bending that can be harmful.

Dutch Hoe: This is also known as a scuffle hoe. The head is usually made from steel and attached to a long handle made out of wood although they could be made from other materials as well. The Dutch hoe cuts weeds off at the roots but is not suitable for weeds growing really close to the plants.

Most other long handled tools used in weeding are different variations of the hoe and are very effective especially for people who cannot readily go down on their knees to weed.
