Luminaries are paper lanterns that are commonly formed using candles placed inside paper bags. The paper bags are set in some sands. This art was originally practiced in old Mexico and some parts of southwest US during Christmas eves. The purpose of luminary candles is to illuminate a pathway, a stairway or other areas during occasions. This art has in the recent years spread in other countries. It becomes commonly observed during celebrations, holidays among other events. Consider the following factors in case you need to make a luminary candle.

First, select the bags you wish to use to create your luminaries. It is advisable that you choose brown bags that are lunch-sized in shape. These were the type of bags that were used in traditional Mexico. These type of bags block much light, except that light that shines through cutout areas of the said bag. You will need to pick colored gift sacks. Select those that are made from paper that is not transparent. You may opt for thick paper. Colored bags fit proms and weddings

Consider coming up with innovative designs that are appropriate with you. Select the anterior part design of bags. Make sure that the patterns on the anterior part of your bags do not allow much space openings. Large space openings on the anterior part of your bags are known to decrease your bags stability. This may result to crumbling of your bags. Consider coming up with easy and quick designs to cut out. More simple designs are easier and quicker.

You should transfer your design to a cardboard or a cardstock. By so doing, you will be in a position to use the design of your choice as the pattern on your bag. Tape or glue a colored tissue paper around the cutout pattern. The aim of doing this is to filter light. Another work of tissue paper is to make light appear in a variety of colors.

It is time to light your luminaries now. Prepare to light them. Several light sources may provide sufficient light for your luminary. Set about 453g of sand at the bottom of your luminaries. This is meant to weigh them down. You can substitute sand with rocks or any other heavy object. You can now set a light candle inside the sand and push it so that it sits firmly in the bag. Now place a battery powered tea light on the sand inside the bag. For light, set a lit glow stick inside the bag.

Set your luminaries in rows. The rows can be along a pathway, a driveway or on stairwells. Be creative and come up with a method to set up your luminaries. The nature of the occasion at hand may influence the way you set up your patterns.

You should light your luminary before it is dark. Use your preferred source of light to do this. If your luminaries were to used to welcome guests, or your friends, consider lighting them about 15 minutes before the visitors reach. Do not start lighting the luminaries when you see the visitors

Cut out the design of one side of the bags with a utility knife. Place a quilter mat, a slab of wood or a cardboard under one layer of your bags when cutting your designs out.
