Window cleaning or washing of windows serves to promote good hygiene and improve lighting. It can be done commercially by professionals or at household level. Windows look appealing when they are cleaned regularly. The tools used may either be simple or complex. There are also various techniques for cleaning, each with their advantages and shortcomings. Choice of technique and tools to use depends on affordability, effectiveness and duration of the entire process.

Some of the pieces of equipment that you will need to successfully do the cleaning include buckets with water, a squeegee, a mop, a scraper and detergents among other items. The squeegee is made up of a handle, a rubber end and a channel for holding water. It effectively drains off excess water from the cleaned glass surface. The scraper is important in the removal of tough and stubborn marks (such as paint). There may or may not be need for a ladder depending on the heights to be accessed.

Having collected all the necessary items, you can now proceed to the cleaning process. First apply detergent all over the surface of the glass using a wet mop. This exposes any stuck up materials and therefore a scraper comes in handy at this point. To avoid scratches, unidirectional forward scrapping is recommended. Use the squeegee to drain all the water from the surface.

The best cleaning technique involves the use of vertical strokes on one side and horizontal ones on the other. The advantage of this is that it makes dirt stains more visible on the surface. A sponge and a squeegee used together also greatly help in improving visibility of dirt. If there are minor scratches left on glass at the end, they can be removed using toothpaste. The window corners are at times left unreached by the tools. Cotton swabs can be used here.

To get the best results ensure that you conduct the exercise on a sunless day. This minimizes the chances of the detergent drying up before polishing is done. Old cotton T shirts or some crumpled newspapers can be safely used on bright glass surfaces that are well polished.

One of the challenges window cleaners face is the risk of losing their own lives while working on storey buildings. Slippage can be provoked by the soapy water and unstable equipment such as ladders. The fall may also be precipitated by carelessness on the part of the cleaners. Another challenge is the shortage of water.

One of the measures put in place to alleviate the challenge of human accidents is through use of automated machines. As much as this is an expensive venture, it goes a long way in reducing the rates of accidents resulting from falls. A cheaper alternative is modifying the ladders to make them more stable. Minimising the time spent on the ladder also reduces the risk.

Window cleaning is both enjoyable and easy if done in the right manner. Proper equipment, the right skills and permissive weather are necessary. Regular cleaning of household and office windows is something that you should adopt. The beauty of it is that it will more often than not result in huge savings in costs of lighting.
