Easy Yard Maintenance Options

If you have a decent-size yard, you probably spend several hours a week maintaining your grass and plant life. Taking care of one's yard can be a bit of a chore, but there are ways to make the process a bit easier. Here are a few suggestions that can provide you with a bit more time to enjoy your yard rather than spending all of your free time maintaining the yard.

A good first step would be to take stock of your yard. If it is filled with plants and shrubs, it might be wise to reduce the overall number of plants or perhaps remove them and replace these items with plants that require less care in general. It is also wise, especially in drought-prone areas, to opt for plants that are meant to grow in your area. You will save money on your water bill, and you won't have to go out and physically water the plants as much which saves you time throughout the week.

While grass is beautiful, it is a lot of work. Most of us also grow a type of grass that truly is not suitable for our geographic area. Replant your yard with a native grass, and you will use less water and have less problems with weeds and other issues. You also could consider paving over your yard and creating a beautiful backyard patio that only needs sweeping and requires no daily or weekly watering, trimming and mowing.

Backyard maintenance doesn't have to be set for just one day each week. You can easily spread it out across the week. Set one hour each week for mowing and grass care. Then add a half hour twice each week for trimming or removing weeds or sweeping the patio. Not only will this free up some weekend time, it will provide you with a good source of exercise, as well.

If you have special water features on your property, such as a birdbath or perhaps a fountain, it is essential that the water in these items be carefully maintained. Otherwise, the birds and animals that visit these features can become ill from unclean water. There are products that you can use that not only keep the water clean, they are also easy to use and contain absolutely no chemicals.

Healthy Ponds has created two such products, the Fountain Water Cleaner and the Birdbath Water Cleaner. Each of these products includes a dispenser that you fill every 30 days with a small packet of bacteria. This chemical-free packet contains beneficial strains of bacteria that breakdown the organic matter that makes your water dirty and murky. The packets are completely safe for people, pets, birds and wildlife and both products have been approved by veterinarians.
